  • Nigerian Army Raids Plateau Kidnappers’ Hideout, Neutralizes Suspects After Soldier Attack

Troops of the Nigerian Army under 3 Division/Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP) have successfully raided a kidnappers’ hideout near Lantom Village, Kadarko District, Plateau State, neutralizing armed suspects following an attempted attack on a soldier during the operation.

According to a statement by Captain Joshua Atu John, Acting Military Information Officer, the raid was conducted on January 6, 2026, based on intelligence about the gang terrorizing local communities. The initial operation led to the arrest of four suspects and the seizure of weapons including a locally fabricated rifle, an axe, and a machete. Two gang members reportedly escaped with an AK-47 rifle.

The arrested suspects later revealed the location of a hidden cache of arms and ammunition. However, while guiding troops to the cache, they attempted to disarm a soldier in a bid to escape, and were decisively neutralized. Follow-up operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining fugitives and recover the missing weapon.

Major General EF Oyinlola, General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of JTF OPEP, commended the troops for their courage and professionalism, emphasizing the army’s commitment to restoring peace and protecting lives and property in Plateau State. Citizens were urged to continue providing timely and credible intelligence to security agencies.

  • Berom Youths Demand Proscription Of Miyetti Allah, Prosecution Of Leaders After Deadly Plateau Attacks
    January 7, 2026 – Plateau State

The Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM) has condemned recent coordinated attacks on Jol community in Riyom Local Government Area and Gero in Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, describing them as acts of sustained terror targeting indigenous communities. The attacks, which occurred on January 6, 2026, claimed several lives, including Mr. Pius Luka Dida, Markus Danladi, Peter, and Acham Ayuba.

BYM leader Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri called the killings a “grim reminder of the sustained and systematic terror being unleashed on indigenous communities of Plateau State.” In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Rwang Tengwong, the association accused the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) of complicity, criticizing its chairman for falsely blaming “Berom terrorists” for attacks on Fulani persons.

The attacks reportedly caused widespread economic losses, with armed herders destroying dry-season farmlands in Kwi community, resulting in damages estimated at over ₦14 million. The Berom youth group demanded the immediate proscription of MACBAN and the arrest, investigation, and prosecution of its leadership. They called on security agencies and international bodies to hold Ibrahim Yusuf and other leaders of Miyetti Allah accountable for the violence.

The association also urged prompt compensation for the families of the victims and affected farmers, alongside deployment of adequate security personnel to protect vulnerable communities across Plateau State. The group emphasized that preventive measures and swift justice are essential to curbing recurring violence and safeguarding indigenous populations.

These attacks are part of a growing pattern of violence in Plateau State, where disputes between herders and local communities have escalated into deadly conflicts over land, grazing rights, and security. Observers note that without decisive action against perpetrators and systemic reform of herding practices, such violent incidents are likely to continue. The BYM’s call for legal and security interventions reflects rising frustration among indigenous populations over perceived impunity and the failure of existing mechanisms to prevent attacks.

Security analysts say that coordinated efforts by law enforcement, community leaders, and the judiciary are critical to restoring peace, ensuring accountability, and protecting lives and property in Plateau State. Meanwhile, families of victims continue to mourn losses, highlighting the urgent need for government intervention to prevent further bloodshed.

Nigerian Army troops have successfully rescued Colonel Ajanaku (rtd.), who was abducted by gunmen from his residence in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State in the early hours of January 5, 2026. The retired officer was reportedly kidnapped around 12:45 a.m. after armed men stormed his house opposite the Salvation Army Church along Rukuba Road.

Following the incident, soldiers from relevant military sectors were immediately mobilised and launched an intensive search-and-rescue operation, tracking the kidnappers through the Wildlife Park and combing nearby forests, caves, and rocky terrains believed to serve as criminal hideouts. Security expert Zagazola Makama disclosed that the abductors later contacted the victim’s wife, demanding a ₦200 million ransom and threatening to kill the officer if rescue efforts were not halted.

Despite the threats, security forces switched to covert operations, a strategy that proved effective. Colonel Ajanaku was rescued safely at about 5:30 p.m. the same day at the outskirts of the Rafiki axis in Bassa LGA. He is currently receiving medical attention at a military facility and is expected to be debriefed to provide intelligence that could aid follow-up operations.

Meanwhile, troops have continued combing surrounding forests and suspected hideouts in pursuit of the fleeing suspects, as security operations in the area remain ongoing. The successful rescue underscores the military’s commitment to tackling kidnapping and restoring security across Plateau State and beyond.

  • Kano State Allocates ₦2 Billion for Generator Maintenance and Servicing in 2026 Budget Amid Nigeria’s Worsening Electricity Crisis

The Kano State Government has earmarked ₦2 billion in its 2026 budget for the servicing and maintenance of generating sets across government facilities, highlighting the state’s continued reliance on alternative power sources due to Nigeria’s unreliable electricity supply. The allocation was revealed in the 2026 appropriation document published on the Open States transparency platform owned by BudgIT and reviewed by SaharaReporters.

The spending plan comes despite recent efforts by Kano State, alongside Katsina and Jigawa states, to establish Nigeria’s first regional electricity market with an initial ₦50 billion funding commitment. Kano has also invested in independent power projects, including the 10-megawatt Tiga Hydro Power Plant, which is already producing electricity, and another six-megawatt project that was about 65 percent completed as of late 2024.

However, persistent national power challenges continue to undermine these initiatives. Nigeria’s electricity crisis deepened recently after the national grid collapsed, plunging power generation from over 2,000 megawatts to just 139.92MW within an hour and leaving most distribution companies without electricity supply. Kano was among several states that received zero allocation during the outage.

The ₦2 billion generator maintenance budget underscores the harsh reality facing many Nigerian states as they grapple with frequent grid failures and inadequate power infrastructure, mirroring similar spending patterns elsewhere, including Plateau State’s ₦400 million allocation in 2025 for the purchase of thousands of generators.
