  • NSIB Begins Probe Of Abuja Train Derailment, Confirms 12 Injuries

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that 12 passengers sustained injuries out of the 583 on board the Asham train that derailed in Abuja last Tuesday.

NSIB Director General, Captain Alex Badeh, said on Tuesday that an Investigator-in-Charge has been appointed to lead the probe in collaboration with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and other stakeholders.

He noted that evidence-preservation measures had been taken, including securing the site and collecting CCTV footage and other critical data to determine the cause of the derailment.

Badeh urged the Federal Government to address funding shortfalls to strengthen the bureau’s capacity for thorough investigations and ensure public safety.

The NSIB announced that its final report will be released within 30 days of the incident and shared with the NRC, regulators, and the public.

The derailment occurred along the Kaduna corridor shortly after the train departed Abuja around 11 am en route to Kaduna. Following the incident, the NRC suspended Abuja–Kaduna train operations until further notice and began processing refunds for affected passengers.
