  • News Brief: NAPTIP Busts Cross-Border Trafficking Cartel in Abuja, Rescues 29 Victims

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has dismantled a cross-border human trafficking ring in Gwagwalada, Abuja, rescuing 29 foreign victims and arresting eight suspects.

The victims — 20 young women (17–28 years) and nine young men (18–30 years) — were lured with false job offers but later forced into sexual exploitation and cybercrime schemes. Their passports, phones, SIM cards, and financial records were recovered during the raid.

The operation followed a tip-off from the Ghanaian Embassy, after a Ghanaian victim duped of $3,500 raised an alarm when his passport and belongings were seized.

Days earlier, NAPTIP intercepted another trafficking attempt involving 25 women being smuggled to Saudi Arabia for domestic servitude.

DG Binta Adamu Bello described the raid as a “major breakthrough”, stressing that traffickers will face the “full wrath of the law”. She reaffirmed NAPTIP’s commitment to victim rehabilitation, prosecution of offenders, and international collaboration against trafficking.

The rescued victims are currently in safe shelters under NAPTIP’s care, while the suspects undergo interrogation ahead of prosecution.
