  • The Sweet but Dangerous Treasure
In the middle of the dry savanna, a hungry leopard climbed a tall, rough tree. High above the ground hung a large golden beehive, heavy with sweet honey. The smell of the honey drifted through the air, tempting the leopard more and more.
Ignoring the loud buzzing around him, the leopard stretched his paw and bit into the dripping hive. Thick golden honey began to pour down the bark of the tree. For a moment, the leopard tasted the sweet reward he had been craving.
But the bees were not happy.
Within seconds, hundreds of angry bees swarmed around the leopard. They buzzed loudly, flying around his face and body to defend their home. The leopard growled and shook his head, but the bees kept coming.
Realizing the treasure was not worth the trouble, the leopard quickly climbed down the tree and ran across the open land, leaving the broken hive behind.
From that day on, the leopard remembered a simple lesson of the wild:
Sometimes the sweetest rewards come with the sharpest stings.

  • Lagos has come a long way—especially when you look back at the colonial era. Its location along the Lagos Lagoon made it a strategic choice for the colonial administration, turning the city into a major center of British rule and commerce at the time.

These photographs, sourced from the Time Magazine archives, offer a rare glimpse into Lagos in the 1800s. They capture a city under colonial control, when Europeans dominated political power and urban planning shaped daily life.

What stands out in these images is the sense of order—well-laid streets, structured neighborhoods, and a city that reflected the priorities of its rulers. Lagos was already evolving into an organized urban space, long before the fast-paced megacity we know today.

The old days carry their own charm and lessons.

  • Toronto Police Charge Nigerian-Canadian Babatunde Afuwape With First-Degree Murder of University of Toronto Student

Toronto Police have arrested and charged 28-year-old Nigerian-Canadian Babatunde Afuwape in connection with the fatal shooting of Shivank Avasthi, a 20-year-old third-year student at the University of Toronto. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, along the Highland Creek Trail near Old Kingston Road, where Avasthi was found with a gunshot wound and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police described the killing as planned and deliberate, noting that the accused and the victim were likely strangers. Officers responded to a report of “unknown trouble” around 3:34 p.m., but Afuwape had already fled the scene. The investigation revealed no immediate motive for the shooting, but authorities are actively seeking witnesses who may have seen the suspect near the trail or the campus on that day.

Detective Sergeant Stacey McCabe of the Homicide and Missing Persons Unit called the incident “deeply tragic”, highlighting Avasthi as a bright international student from India with a promising future. She also emphasized the fear and concern the shooting caused among students, staff, and local residents, reassuring the community that the suspect is now in custody.

Afuwape, a resident of Toronto, was scheduled to appear before the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on January 6, 2026. Investigators continue to appeal to the public for additional information to support the ongoing investigation.

This case underscores rising concerns about public safety around urban trails and campus areas in Toronto, and the police have reassured the public of their commitment to solving the crime and preventing further incidents.

  • United States Commits $200Million To Over 900 Christian Healthcare Facilities In Nigeria Under New $5.1Billion US–Nigeria Health Pact

The United States has announced a $200 million allocation to more than 900 Christian faith-based healthcare facilities across Nigeria as part of a newly signed five-year, $5.1 billion bilateral health cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nigerian government. According to the US Mission in Nigeria, the agreement aligns with the America First Global Health Strategy and aims to expand access to integrated healthcare services, including HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, and maternal and child health care, particularly in underserved communities. Christian health facilities, which make up about 10 percent of healthcare providers in Nigeria but serve over 30 percent of the population, were identified as critical to healthcare delivery. Under the broader MOU, the United States plans to invest $2.1 billion while Nigeria commits $3 billion in domestic health spending over five years, marking the largest co-investment under the strategy and strengthening bilateral health cooperation between both countries.

  • FIRS Under Pressure as Accountability Group ICADAR Demands Full Disclosure of Tax Agreement With France, Gives Seven-Day Ultimatum

The Impacthive Centre for Accountability, Democracy and Rights (ICADAR) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), demanding full disclosure of documents relating to its tax cooperation agreement with France. Invoking the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, the group requested access to the Memorandum of Understanding signed between FIRS and France’s tax authority, DGFiP, alongside detailed information on the appointment of Xpress Payment Solutions Limited as a Treasury Single Account (TSA) collecting agent. ICADAR also called for transparency regarding the company’s ownership structure and the percentage of revenue it is authorised to collect. The demand follows growing public criticism from political groups, including the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), which warned that the agreement could threaten Nigeria’s fiscal sovereignty, data security, and economic independence unless its full terms are made public.

  • There are officially 1.25 million people living with HIV in Russia — roughly one in every hundred residents

These figures were reported by academician Vadim Pokrovsky from Rospotrebnadzor.

Around 1.5 million people become infected worldwide each year, including more than 50,000 in Russia. Since the start of the epidemic, HIV has taken roughly 40 million lives — more than the Spanish flu and COVID.

The virus spreads fastest where people do not control their sexual contacts and ignore basic safety.

Russia’s infection rate is three to five times higher than the European average. In the EU, access to therapy is nearly universal, while in Russia only 60–70% of those officially registered receive treatment.

Europe invests in prevention, testing, and accessible treatment, while Russia pretends the problem will resolve itself. As you can see, it hasn’t.

  • "Over 200k people are living with HIV in Rivers state"— Nedu’s podcast guest says, as they raise awareness about the high HIV rate in Lagos.

A recent episode of The Clarity Zone Podcast hosted by media personality Nedu Wazobia sparked conversations online after a guest opened up about the growing concern of HIV/AIDS in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria.

Speaking on the show, the guest highlighted the alarming statistics of HIV prevalence across several states, naming Rivers, Benue, Akwa Ibom, and Anambra as some of the states with the highest number of people living with the virus.

“Rivers State has over 200k. The next is Akwa Ibom with over 100k, and funny enough, Anambra State also has about 100k,” the guest said.

The speaker, also discussed efforts being made to promote awareness and connection among people living with the virus, citing the idea of ‘positive bondship’ a space where HIV-positive individuals can meet and build relationships safely.

“We’re trying so hard to curb it, that’s why we have positive bondship that’s why if you’re HIV positive, you can meet your fellow HIV positive. But on this part of the Island, people just believe because I’m positive doesn’t mean I cannot be with who’s negative,” the guest added.

They went on to address the widespread stigma and denial surrounding HIV, noting that many Nigerians, including influential figures, live with the virus in silence.

“A lot of people are in denial. Some of them are like, ‘Anything can kill a man, no be to die?’ Even our politicians, some of them are like that they are HIV positive. Most times people don’t know,” the guest said.

The emotional confession has stirred discussions on social media, with many praising the speaker’s courage to break the silence on a topic often treated as taboo in Nigeria.

  • "4,000 Young Women Contract HIV Weekly" — AIDS Healthcare Foundation.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria has raised serious concern over the increasing rate of HIV infections among young women, revealing that about 4,000 females aged 15 to 24 are newly infected each week, with over 3,300 of those cases occurring in sub-Saharan Africa.

In a statement issued ahead of the 2025 International Day of the Girl (IDG), AHF Nigeria’s Advocacy and Marketing Manager, Steve Aborisade, urged governments to scale up investments in HIV and STI prevention, testing & treatment, as well as implement policies that improve access to healthcare, education, and reproductive health services.

Aborisade announced that to commemorate the Day of the Girl, AHF Nigeria would host an empowerment event on October 10 at Community Commercial Secondary School, Ikot Oku Ubo, Uyo. The event will focus on promoting menstrual health, leadership & education, while recognizing innovative ideas from girls & distributing free sanitary pads.

He added that civil society partners, including CISHAN, CCCRN, and ECEWS, will participate in the event, alongside representatives from the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Women Affairs.

AHF Nigeria Country Programme Director, Dr. Echey Ijezie, decried the challenges facing young girls, such as inadequate menstrual health support, gender-based violence, and poor access to sexual and reproductive healthcare.

“At AHF Nigeria, we are deeply concerned about the barriers confronting young girls. Every week, thousands become infected with HIV due to inequality, limited education, and poor access to health services,” he said.

Ijezie further disclosed that in 2023, an estimated 1.9 million adolescent girls and young women were living with HIV globally, compared to 1.2 million boys and young men.

He noted that the International Day of the Girl, celebrated annually on October 11, serves as an opportunity to honour girls’ achievements and push for policies that protect and empower them.

  • Bill Gates Raises Alarm Over High Child Mortality in Northern Nigeria.

Philanthropist Bill Gates has sounded the alarm over child mortality in northern Nigeria, revealing that “a kid born in northern Nigeria has a 15% chance of dying before the age of five.”

Speaking at a Reuters Newsmaker event in New York on Monday, Gates said the situation highlights the urgency of reversing cuts in global health aid. “The world is at a crossroads, with millions of children at risk of dy+ng if funding drops too steeply. You can either be part of improving that or act like that doesn’t matter,” he warned.

Ahead of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s annual Goalkeepers event, Gates pledged $912 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. But he stressed that private philanthropy cannot fully cover government shortfalls: “I am not capable of making up what the government cuts, and I don’t want to create an illusion of that.”

Global health funding has dropped sharply, with assistance falling 21% between 2024 and 2025, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. Gates warned that without urgent action, progress achieved since 2000 which halved child mortality and saved about five million lives each year could be reversed.

Still, he expressed optimism that the right investments could save millions of lives by 2045, when he plans to have given away almost his entire $200 billion fortune. This, he noted, would require sustained support for organisations like the Global Fund and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, as well as rapid adoption of new innovations such as the long-acting HIV prevention drug, lenacapavir.

“What’s happening to the health of the world’s children is worse than most people realise, but our long-term prospects are better than most people can imagine,” Gates said.

While many countries have reduced support, Spain increased its contributions this year—raising its donation to the Global Fund by 12% and to Gavi by 30%.
Bill Gates Raises Alarm Over High Child Mortality in Northern Nigeria. Philanthropist Bill Gates has sounded the alarm over child mortality in northern Nigeria, revealing that “a kid born in northern Nigeria has a 15% chance of dying before the age of five.” Speaking at a Reuters Newsmaker event in New York on Monday, Gates said the situation highlights the urgency of reversing cuts in global health aid. “The world is at a crossroads, with millions of children at risk of dy+ng if funding drops too steeply. You can either be part of improving that or act like that doesn’t matter,” he warned. • Canada Rejects Over 1,596 Nigerian Asylum Claims in 2025.

Canada has denied 1,596 asylum applications from Nigerians between January and August 2025, fresh data from the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) show.

Out of 3,548 claims filed so far, 2,292 were accepted—an approval rate of about 65 per cent, higher than in previous years.

Nigeria remains one of the top sources of asylum seekers in Canada, alongside Mexico, India, Haiti and Colombia. Analysts link the surge to insecurity caused by Boko Haram and economic hardship. Most claimants are hosted in Ontario and Alberta.

Under Canadian law, the IRB grants protection if applicants meet the UN definition of refugees or face risks such as tort¥re or cruel treatment in their home countries.

Social groups considered include women, LGBTQ+ individuals and people living with HIV/AIDS. Claims are usually filed at ports of entry or through immigration officers before referral to the Refugee Protection Division.

Despite the recent rise in approvals, Nigerian claims have historically faced high rejection rates. Between 2013 and 2024, the IRB denied 13,171 applications and accepted 10,580. Rejections peaked in 2019 with 3,951 cases. In 2024 alone, 811 were denied, while 2,230 were approved.

Nigeria ranked eighth among the top 10 countries with the most successful claims last year, following Turkiye, Mexico, Colombia, Iran, Pakistan, Haiti, and Afghanistan.

Speaking on the trend, Imaobong Ladipo-Sanusi, Executive Director of the Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation, said many Nigerians misunderstand refugee laws, leading to rejections.

“Documentation is crucial. Coming irregularly gets you rejected. But migration must be safe, orderly and regular, and those truly in need of protection should be protected,” she said.
