Anthony Mackie’s $150M Epic Desert Warrior to Premiere at Zurich Film Festival
Saudi Arabia’s long-awaited Hollywood-style blockbuster Desert Warrior, starring Anthony Mackie, is finally set to have its world premiere at the Zurich Film Festival on September 28.
Directed by Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), the $150 million period action film also features Ben Kingsley and Aiysha Hart. The epic was shot in 2021 against the backdrop of the Saudi desert near the futuristic city of NEOM, but its release has been delayed by reshoots, recuts, and production disputes.
Set in pre-Islamic 7th century Arabia, the film tells the story of Emperor Kisra (Kingsley), a ruthless ruler, and Princess Hind (Hart), who escapes his grip and joins forces with a mysterious bandit (Mackie). Together, they rally rival tribes to challenge Kisra’s massive army.
Desert Warrior is produced by MBC Studios, alongside Jeremy Bolt (Resident Evil) and AGC Studios’ Stuart Ford. Backed by the Saudi Film Commission and the country’s Quality of Life program, the film reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing ambition to create world-class cinema for global audiences.
The film’s Zurich premiere will be attended by its international cast and crew. AGC International is handling worldwide sales.
