Peter Obi Hails Ibadan’s Role in Nigeria’s History, Visits Olubadan-Designate Rashidi Ladoja
Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has described Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, as a city whose contributions to Nigeria’s history cannot be overlooked.
Obi made the remarks on Sunday during a courtesy visit to the Olubadan-designate, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, at his Bodija residence in Ibadan. He was accompanied by Labour Party leaders and notable Igbo indigenes.
The former governor of Anambra State praised Ibadan’s central role in shaping Nigeria’s socio-economic and political landscape, while commending the contributions of its indigenes both at home and in the diaspora.
“The position of Ibadan in the history of Nigeria cannot be ignored. It is a home to all because of the hospitable nature of its people,” Obi said.
He further lauded Ladoja’s service as a former governor and senator, expressing confidence that his vast experience would enrich his reign as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
“Oba Ladoja will enjoy support across the country in his new assignment. On my part, I will provide necessary assistance to ensure his reign is successful,” Obi added.
In his response, the Olubadan-designate expressed gratitude to God, describing his ascension to the throne as another opportunity to serve humanity.
“That I am alive today is a confirmation of God’s grace upon my life,” Ladoja said. “The Olubadan stool is not about glamour but about service to the people. It is God who enthrones, not wealth or influence. The era of glamour is gone; now it is about service and what one offers society.”
