Ahead of their highly anticipated final at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Tinubu has approved the full payment of allowances and match bonuses for players, coaches, and officials — including entitlements for the grand finale on July 26.
The announcement was made by Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, who hailed the move as “policy in motion” and a strong statement of commitment to athletes' welfare under Tinubu’s administration.
Dikko also confirmed that Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, will receive the same treatment as they gear up for the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Côte d’Ivoire, with boosted bonuses and allowances.
“This is a new era — one of dignity, trust, and timely rewards,” Dikko said. He emphasized that the government is setting a standard that ensures no more delays or drama in athletes’ payments.
As the Super Falcons march into the WAFCON final, they do so backed by a government that’s finally walking the talk on sports reform and athlete empowerment.
