Governor Bago Under Fire for Insulting Protocol Director During Security Meeting

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State has come under renewed public scrutiny after a video surfaced showing him verbally abusing his Director of Protocol, Abdullahi Yarima, during a security council meeting at the Government House in Minna.

In the video, obtained by SaharaReporters, the governor is heard speaking in Hausa and saying: “Yarima, you lack sense, you are very stupid.”

Sources say the clip was originally shared on WhatsApp by a Channels TV cameraman, Abdullahi Umar—an action that reportedly resulted in his suspension.

According to insiders, Umar had grown frustrated after the governor excluded him from a trip to New Bussa, where Bago visited the families of pupils kidnapped from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Agwara LGA. The abduction, which occurred on November 21, 2025, involved at least 303 pupils and 12 staff members, though over 50 pupils later managed to escape. Security forces, including police and military units, are currently working to rescue the remaining victims.

Governor Bago, sources claim, also accused Yarima of engaging in gossip and side conversations. He reportedly urged Channels TV management to reassign Umar from the Government House and raised concerns about the cameraman’s alleged unauthorized use of the station’s logo in producing the video.

This incident adds to a growing list of controversies surrounding Bago. He has previously faced accusations of dishonesty regarding payments to graduate assistants working on his farm, and he has been criticized for directing police action against student activist Isah Mokwa.
