Rising Terrorism: Ex-Minister Warns Tinubu That Nigeria May Fail Without Urgent Action

A former Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Chief Nduese Essien, has issued a strong warning to President Bola Tinubu, urging the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive action against the growing wave of terrorism across Nigeria. Essien said the country is approaching a dangerous tipping point, with recent killings, kidnappings, and coordinated attacks showing a disturbing breakdown of national security.

Speaking in Abuja, the former lawmaker expressed deep concern over the frequency and brutality of recent incidents—including the kidnapping and killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba in Borno, the abduction of over 64 people in Zamfara, the kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi, the killing of worshippers in Kwara, and the mass abduction of more than 300 students in Niger State.

Essien accused the Tinubu administration of failing to demonstrate urgency, criticizing the appointment of politicians without security experience to top defence positions. According to him, Nigeria needs strategic leadership, not political compensation, to defeat highly adaptive terrorist networks.

He argued that political interference, corruption, uncontrolled population growth, uneducated youths, and collaborators within the security system are fueling terrorism. He warned that these issues, if not addressed, could push Nigeria toward economic collapse, mass displacement, and deepened ethno-religious conflict.

Essien called on traditional rulers, civil society, religious leaders, and citizens to unite and support genuine efforts to restore security. He also condemned the suppression of opposition voices, warning that democracy cannot survive when dissent is silenced.

He urged President Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, and Defence Ministers to either deliver results or step aside, adding that Nigeria’s future depends on immediate and courageous action.
