Gumi Defends Bandit Visits, Says He’s Backed by Police and Govt Officials
Sheikh Ahmad Gumi defended his visits to bandits during the 2025 Southwest Muslims Ulama Summit at the University of Ibadan, saying his engagements are not secret and that he always travels with police, government officials, and other representatives. He criticised years of media and public “misrepresentation” of his actions, arguing that his outreach aims to understand the roots of insecurity and create pathways for education and rehabilitation. Gumi said lack of education and unemployment are the main drivers of the crisis, claiming that isolated herders become disconnected from society due to neglect. He maintained that meeting armed groups is necessary to address insecurity at its source and expressed frustration over persistent public attacks and misunderstanding of his efforts, while affirming solidarity with scholars at the summit despite language differences.
