DSS Arrests OAU Students Over Protest Against FCT Minister Wike During University Lecture

Two students from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, have been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) following a peaceful protest against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
The protest took place during the 2025 edition of the OAU Distinguished Personality Lecture held on Thursday.
The arrested students, identified as Kelechi Ejike and Joshua Temitope Oladepo, had called for compensation for Abuja residents whose homes were allegedly demolished as part of an urban renewal program carried out under Wike’s leadership.
In videos obtained by SaharaReporters, the students were seen holding placards and chanting, “Minister Wike, we demand you compensate the people whose houses you demolished.” Their demonstration briefly disrupted the event.
Wike, who served as the keynote speaker, was joined at the lecture by other high-profile guests, including Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun, former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom.
DSS personnel were seen forcibly removing the students from the venue before taking them into custody. The arrests have drawn sharp criticism from human rights advocates and student activists, who have described the action as a violation of the right to free speech and peaceful assembly.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State (2015–2023), was appointed FCT Minister in August 2023 by President Bola Tinubu. His tenure has been marked by aggressive urban development initiatives, including the demolition of several structures in Abuja. While Wike defends the demolitions as necessary to enforce the city's master plan, critics argue that they have displaced thousands without adequate compensation.
