Nigeria Needs Non-Partisan INEC Chairman With Impeccable Character — Samson Itodo

Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, has said that Nigeria requires a person of impeccable character and non-partisan standing to lead the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Itodo stressed that anyone who succeeds the current INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, must be courageous, independent-minded, and committed to upholding the law regardless of political pressure.

“The next INEC chairman should be someone with an unblemished record, without political ties, and with the courage to always do the right thing,” he said.

While acknowledging the significant reforms introduced under INEC in recent years, Itodo lamented that the progress has been undermined by incidents of electoral malpractice.

He noted that Nigeria’s democratic process can only be strengthened if electoral leadership is anchored on integrity, transparency, and accountability.
