Adamawa Lawmaker Jafar Abubakar Distributes N224m Cash To Youths, Friends

Hon. Jafar Abubakar, representing Mubi North, Mubi South, and Maiha Federal Constituency in Adamawa State, has reportedly shared ₦224 million in cash among his constituents.

According to sources, ₦124 million was given to “empower” hundreds of youths, while ₦100 million was handed out to his childhood friends, whom he described as “not well-to-do.” The money was allegedly withdrawn from a commercial bank in mint notes and distributed directly.

Critics condemned the gesture as another example of Nigeria’s reckless political culture, where public officials flaunt questionable wealth in cash giveaways while millions face hunger, unemployment, and inflation.

On social media, reactions trailed the development. Daniel Pablo wrote: “This is why Nigeria can never work.” Another user, King Mathew, said: “This is the time for EFCC to show workings, but no—they wait for yahoo boys with laptops and iPhones.”

The controversy comes months after a federal lawmaker disclosed that Senators and Representatives receive billions of naira for “constituency projects,” sparking renewed outrage over corruption, impunity, and opaque spending in Nigeria’s legislature.
