FCT Resident Doctors Declare Indefinite Strike

Resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have declared an indefinite strike beginning Monday, citing the government’s failure to address their demands despite earlier warnings.

In a statement issued late Sunday, the Association of Resident Doctors, FCTA (ARD-FCTA), announced the decision following an Emergency General Meeting on September 14.

“The Association of Resident Doctors, FCTA, at its Emergency General Meeting held on 14th September 2025, resolved to embark on an indefinite strike action with effect from 8:00 am, Monday, 15th September 2025,” the group’s General Secretary, Agbor Affiong, stated.

According to ARD-FCTA, management failed to address any of their “legitimate demands,” even after a one-week warning strike.

The doctors insisted that the strike would continue “until government and management show genuine commitment to the welfare of doctors and the health of FCT residents.”

Last week, the doctors embarked on a seven-day warning strike over unpaid entitlements, poor welfare, and inadequate manpower, warning that they would escalate to an indefinite strike if “meaningful dialogue” was not held.

During a media appearance last Tuesday, ARD-FCTA chairman George Ebong lamented the dire shortage of doctors in the FCT.

“The FCT has 14 district and general hospitals, but we need about 200 doctors. Right now, we don’t have anything close to that. A single doctor is forced to handle more than 30–40 patients, perform up to 10 caesarean sections, and many of our colleagues are on antidepressants or anti-hypertensives due to the pressure,” he said.

The strike is expected to severely impact healthcare delivery across the FCT until a resolution is reached.
