Flood Alert: Ogun Urges Residents in Isheri, Akute, Others to Relocate
The Ogun State Government has advised residents of several flood-prone communities to relocate to safer areas as heavy rainfall, river overflows, and tidal surges are expected to hit the state in the coming weeks.
The warning affects residents in communities along the Ogun, Ilo, Iju, Owa, and Yemule rivers, including Isheri, Warewa, Akute, parts of Abeokuta, Ayetoro, Itele, Iju, and coastal areas such as Makun, Oni, Iwopin, Igele, Ifaara (Ogun Waterside), Ebute-Imobi (Ijebu East), Tungeji Island, and Agosasa in Ipokia LGA.
According to the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, the flooding may be compounded by the release of water from the Oyan Dam, in addition to heavy inflows from northern Nigeria and neighboring Benin Republic.
“The overflow will last for about two weeks and is part of the second phase of flooding that usually occurs between September and November every year,” Oresanya said in a midterm flood alert.
The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has forecast September to record the highest rainfall at 204mm, followed by 190mm in October, while November is expected to see reduced levels at 93mm.
To cushion the impact, Oresanya said the state government, through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), is on red alert and has prepared temporary emergency camps across the state. The Ministry of Environment is also coordinating with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority to manage water releases from Oyan Dam.
Residents were further urged to avoid using boreholes and well water during the flood period, as contamination risks are high.
The commissioner also appealed to fish farmers operating along floodplains to harvest their stock immediately to prevent losses. Specifically, farmers in Eriwe, Yemule (Ijebu Ode), Ilase, and Ayegbami (Yewa) were warned not to delay.
