Lawless DSS Targets Sowore Instead of Protecting Nigerians

On September 7, 2025, while Nigerians were still mourning the killing of over 130 citizens in a single day, the Department of State Services (DSS) found time — not to protect lives, not to hunt terrorists or kidnappers — but to write to Meta (Facebook’s parent company) demanding the removal of activist Omoyele Sowore’s page.

Why? Because he criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The DSS Letter to Meta

In a letter addressed to Meta’s CEO, the DSS accused Sowore of:

  • Defaming and disparaging President Tinubu.

  • Spreading “misleading information” that threatens national security.

  • Violating cybercrime and terrorism laws.

The agency demanded Facebook take down Sowore’s posts within 24 hours or face “sweeping consequences.”

What was the “dangerous” post? Sowore accused Tinubu of lying in Brazil when he claimed there was no corruption under his government.

What This Reveals

Instead of confronting Nigeria’s real crises — insecurity, corruption, mass killings, and poverty — the DSS is prioritising censorship and image-laundering for politicians.

This raises serious concerns:

  1. Free Speech at Risk – If criticism of government can be branded “terrorism,” then every Nigerian voice is in danger.

  2. Abuse of Institutions – Agencies funded by taxpayers are being weaponised to protect the ruling elite, not the people.

  3. National Embarrassment – Running to Facebook to silence critics makes Nigeria look weak and insecure before the world.

The Bigger Question

Nigerians must ask themselves: how long will we remain hostage to a small, ruthless circle of leaders who fear dissent more than banditry?

Silencing Sowore will not erase the truth. It will only expose the government’s insecurity and deepen the crisis of trust between citizens and the state.
