Tax Relief Incoming: No More Personal Income Tax for Nigerians Earning ₦250K or Less!
Starting January 2026, low-income Nigerians will no longer pay personal income tax, according to major reforms signed into law by President Tinubu.
The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has announced a major win for low-income earners in Nigeria. In a recent interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, he revealed that Nigerians earning ₦250,000 or less monthly will be exempt from paying personal income tax under the new tax law reforms.
This policy, set to take effect from January 2026, aims to:
Protect the poor from excessive taxation
Boost economic growth
Enhance tax compliance
Ensure fairness in the system
> “This tax law will not put cash in your pocket, but at least it won’t take cash away from you if you are poor,” Oyedele explained.
The committee's definition of poverty takes into account Nigeria’s real-life conditions — including average household size and rural lifestyles — rather than rigid global benchmarks.
Middle-income earners (up to ₦2 million monthly) will see reduced tax burdens, while high-income earners will experience slight increases. These adjustments aim to close Nigeria’s massive 70% tax revenue gap, currently at just 30% collection capacity.
The reform is part of a broader effort to modernize Nigeria’s tax system, boost revenue, and ensure the wealthy pay their fair share without crushing everyday citizens or businesses.
