Tragedy on Duty: DSS Operatives Allegedly Shoot Police Inspector in Fatal Case of Mistaken Identity in Anambra

A tragic clash between Nigeria’s security agencies has left one police officer dead, sparking outrage and calls for better inter-agency coordination.

According to reports, Inspector Bello Abdulahi, attached to the 29 Police Mobile Force (PMF) in Awka, was shot during a stop-and-search operation in Uli, Ihiala LGA, Anambra State, on June 24.

The fatal incident occurred around 5:50 p.m. near Danaks Filling Station on the Onitsha/Owerri Expressway. A police patrol team had flagged down an unmarked Toyota Sienna driving the wrong way out of a side road. The vehicle’s occupants, clad in black and armed, refused to comply — prompting a tense standoff.

Eyewitnesses say the men opened fire, fatally wounding Inspector Abdulahi in the lower rib. He was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala, then referred to NAUTH, Nnewi, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The attackers were later identified as DSS operatives affiliated with the Ihiala Local Government Secretariat. They fled immediately after the incident.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the tragic mistake and emphasized the need for clearer communication between agencies. The DSS headquarters in Awka has been notified, and a full investigation is underway.
