Over 300 Vigilantes Launch Assault on Bandits in Plateau Forest, Kill Suspects and Their Wives, Lose Four Members

A major operation involving over 300 local vigilantes and security forces has resulted in the deaths of several suspected bandits and their spouses in the Dutsen Zaki forest, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The offensive, which began on Saturday and continued through Wednesday, aimed to clear out armed groups terrorizing nearby communities such as Zurak, Aduwa, Kinashe, and Odare in the Bashar district.
According to Daily Trust, the vigilante leader, Abdullahi Hussaini, said the operation was launched in response to escalating violence, kidnappings, and insecurity in the region. “We started the fight on Saturday. People in the Bashar area can no longer live in peace. Armed men have turned daily life into a nightmare,” he said.
Hussaini revealed that while the vigilantes successfully overran the bandits' stronghold—killing several suspects along with their wives—they lost four of their own, including the group's commander. Sixteen others were injured and are currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Wase and a hospital in Bauchi State.
“This is not our first attempt,” Hussaini said. “But this time, many of them were killed, others have fled, and we now control the forest.”
Youth leader Shapi’i Sambo confirmed the death of the vigilante commander and said a new one has been appointed to continue the operation. Local residents remain on edge, with many fleeing their homes near the forest in fear of reprisals or renewed violence.
Abdullahi Bin Umar, a resident of one of the affected communities, expressed concern: “People are scared. With the number of bandits killed, no one knows what might happen next.”
The operation is expected to continue until the remaining threats are eliminated from the area.
