Benue Killings: UN-Recognised Rights Group Urges Tinubu to Act or Resign

A United Nations-recognised human rights organisation has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s administration over the persistent killings in Benue State, demanding immediate action or resignation.
The International Organisation for Human Rights Development and Environment (IOHRDE), which holds Special Consultative Status with the UN ECOSOC, described the government's response as a "deafening silence" and a "gross failure" to protect Nigerian lives and property.
In a statement on Monday, IOHRDE President Comrade Akinyemi Ojo Adebayo said the country is facing a humanitarian and security crisis due to "deep-rooted leadership failure, administrative weakness, and poor governance."
“If the Tinubu administration cannot fulfill its constitutional duty to secure the lives of Nigerians, then it must humbly resign,” the statement read.
The group said no region in Nigeria is truly safe anymore, blaming the climate of impunity and lack of accountability for emboldening violent non-state actors.
Calling the situation a “national disgrace,” IOHRDE urged citizens to reject the politics of tribe, religion, and patronage and instead demand competence, character, and capacity from leaders.
“Democracy without accountability is tyranny in disguise,” the statement added.
IOHRDE also appealed to the international community, human rights organisations, and African Union partners to intervene diplomatically to prevent further deterioration of Nigeria’s security and humanitarian situation.
