Early Life
Mark Shuttleworth was born on September 18, 1973, in Welkom, South Africa. He grew up in a country that was going through major changes, but from a young age, Mark showed a deep interest in computers and technology.

Education and Passion for Technology
Mark attended the University of Cape Town, where he studied business science and finance.

The Big Break Net Value
After finishing school, Mark started a company called Thawte in 1995. At that time, the internet was still growing, and online security was a big issue.
Thawte focused on digital certificates, which helped websites become secure and trusted. Many companies needed this service, and Mark’s business quickly became successful.
Just a few years later, in 1999, he sold Thawte to VeriSign for hundreds of millions of dollars. This made him one of the youngest self-made millionaires in South Africa.
Becoming Africa’s First Space Tourist
In 2002, Mark Shuttleworth did something no African had done before he traveled to space.
He paid for a trip aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft and spent about eight days on the International Space Station. During his time in space, he conducted scientific experiments and shared his experience with people back home.
This journey made him Africa’s first space tourist and inspired many young Africans to dream bigger.
Building Ubuntu and Changing the Tech World
After his space journey, Mark focused on something even bigger making technology accessible to everyone.
He founded Canonical Ltd., the company behind Ubuntu, a free and open-source operating system. Ubuntu became popular around the world because it was simple, powerful, and free for anyone to use.
Mark believed that technology should not be limited to a few people. Through Ubuntu, he helped millions of users, developers, and businesses access better tools.
