Tafawa Balewa Square

Tafawa Balewa Square, often called TBS, is one of the most important historical landmarks in Nigeria. Located on Lagos Island, Lagos State, it is a large ceremonial ground that has hosted many major national events including Nigeria’s independence celebration in 1960.

The square is named after Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria’s first Prime Minister and one of the key leaders who helped guide the country toward independence.

Early History

Before it became Tafawa Balewa Square, the area was originally known as Race Course. During the colonial period, the British used the open field for horse racing and public events.
