Tems

Tems, whose full name is Temilade Openiyi, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer known for her soulful voice, emotional depth, and global impact on contemporary music. Born on June 11, 1995, in Lagos State, Nigeria, Tems has become one of the most influential African artists of her generation.

Tems was born in Lagos to a Nigerian mother and British father. After her parents separated, she was raised primarily by her mother in Lagos. Growing up in a supportive environment, she discovered her love for music at an early age. She joined her school choir and began developing her vocal ability under the guidance of her music teacher, who encouraged her songwriting talent.

Tems attended Dowen College in Lagos before moving abroad for further education. She later studied Economics at Monash University in South Africa. Despite pursuing academics, her passion for music never faded. After returning to Nigeria, she worked briefly in digital marketing but eventually decided to pursue music full time.

Her breakthrough came in 2018 with the release of her debut single “Mr Rebel.” The song introduced her as a bold and unique voice in Nigeria’s alternative music scene. However, it was her 2019 single “Try Me” that gained widespread recognition. The song became popular across Nigeria and established her as a rising star.

Tems’ global breakthrough arrived in 2020 when she featured on Wizkid’s hit song “Essence.” The track became an international success and was later remixed with Justin Bieber. “Essence” made history as one of the first Nigerian songs to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, bringing Afrobeats to a wider global audience. Tems’ soulful hook and emotional delivery were widely praised.

In 2020, she released her debut EP For Broken Ears, which showcased her alternative R and B influenced sound. The project received critical acclaim for its introspective lyrics and minimalist production. She followed up with her second EP If Orange Was a Place in 2021, further solidifying her artistic identity.

Tems continued her global rise with collaborations beyond Africa. She featured on “Fountains” with Drake and later co wrote and provided vocals for “Lift Me Up,” a tribute song for the Black Panther Wakanda Forever soundtrack. The song earned her international nominations and recognition.

In 2023, Tems made history by winning a Grammy Award for her contribution to Future’s hit song “Wait For U,” which sampled “Higher” from her EP. The Grammy win cemented her position as one of Africa’s most successful global music stars.

Tems is known for her distinctive voice, which blends soul, R and B, and Afrobeats. Her music often explores themes of vulnerability, independence, self awareness, and emotional growth. Unlike many mainstream artists, she prioritizes artistic authenticity and minimalistic production.

Beyond music, Tems is admired for her calm personality, confident presence, and commitment to empowering women in the industry. She has become a symbol of African excellence on the global stage.

From writing songs in her bedroom to winning international awards and performing on some of the world’s biggest stages, Tems’ journey reflects resilience, originality, and talent. Today, she stands as one of the leading global ambassadors of Afrobeats, inspiring a new generation of artists to embrace authenticity and dream beyond borders.
