Brymo 

Brymo, whose real name is Ọlawale Ọlọfọrọ, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and composer known for his deep lyrical content, alternative sound, and fearless artistic expression. Born on May 9, 1986, in Okokomaiko, Lagos State, Nigeria, Brymo has built a reputation as one of the most unconventional and thought provoking artists in the Nigerian music industry.

Raised in a Yoruba household in Lagos, Brymo grew up in a modest environment. His father was a carpenter, and his mother worked in petty trading. Despite financial limitations, Brymo developed a strong love for music at a young age. He began writing songs as a teenager and was inspired by both Nigerian highlife legends and international artists such as Bob Marley.

Brymo attended Aganju Aka Primary School and later enrolled at the University of Lagos, where he studied Zoology. Although he pursued a science degree, his passion for music remained dominant. While in university, he actively performed and refined his songwriting skills.

Brymo’s early career began in the mid 2000s as part of a music group called Aliens. Although the group did not achieve major commercial success, it provided him with valuable industry exposure. His big break came in 2010 when he featured on Ice Prince’s hit single “Oleku.” The song became one of the biggest Nigerian hits of that year, and Brymo’s distinct voice on the hook gained nationwide attention.

Following the success of “Oleku,” Brymo signed with Chocolate City Music. Under the label, he released his debut studio album Son of a Kapenta in 2012. The album received critical acclaim and showcased his unique blend of Afrobeat, rock, and soul influences.

However, Brymo’s relationship with Chocolate City later became strained, leading to a public contract dispute. The legal battle lasted for years and became one of the most talked about controversies in the Nigerian music industry. Despite the challenges, Brymo remained focused on his artistry and continued releasing music independently.

In 2013, he released Merchants Dealers and Slaves, an album praised for its depth, storytelling, and social commentary. The project solidified his status as a serious alternative artist. He followed up with Tabula Rasa in 2014, further cementing his reputation for intellectual and culturally rooted music.

Brymo is known for blending Yoruba language with English in poetic and symbolic ways. His music often explores themes such as identity, politics, culture, love, philosophy, and African history. He is admired for his fearless approach to addressing controversial and complex topics.

Over the years, Brymo has released several critically acclaimed albums including Oso, Yellow, and 9 Lives. His works are often described as artistic rather than purely commercial, attracting listeners who appreciate deep lyrical content and experimental sound.

Though sometimes controversial for his outspoken opinions and artistic boldness, Brymo remains respected for his authenticity and consistency. He has received multiple awards and nominations recognizing his impact on Nigerian alternative music.
