Nigerian Police Crack Down on Drug Trafficking Syndicate in Anambra, Arrest Six Suspects
The Anambra State Police Command has successfully dismantled a significant drug trafficking syndicate operating in Isuaniocha, Awka North Local Government Area, arresting six suspects, including a female dealer, officials confirmed on Saturday.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the raid was conducted in the early hours of Friday, May 30, 2025, by operatives from the Special Cultism Squad, Obosi Sector, acting on an intelligence tip-off.
“During the operation, six suspects were apprehended, and a substantial quantity of dried leaves suspected to be illicit drugs, alongside other incriminating substances, were seized from the location in Isuaniocha,” Ikenga said.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Chinyere Onwuka (32), John Kennedy Onwuka (36), Chidiebere Onyeze (30), Echeazu Nonso (35), Osita Chukwu Chialuka (21), and Nnebedum Wisdom (25). They are currently in police custody and are set to be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Awka for further investigation and prosecution.
Reacting to the operation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed serious concern over the increasing drug abuse, especially among the youth in Anambra State. He noted that drug use is a significant driver behind many crimes and antisocial behaviours in the community.
CP Orutugu reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intensifying community outreach through the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), aimed at educating youths about the dangers of drug abuse and criminal activities.
This recent crackdown is part of a sustained effort by the Anambra Police to tackle the rise in drug-related offences. Similar operations in the past year have raised alarm across the state. In October 2024, a drug den was uncovered in Nnewi with four arrests and large quantities of methamphetamine seized. Earlier in July, another syndicate linked to cross-border drug trafficking was disrupted in Onitsha.
Experts have linked the growing drug problem to a surge in cult violence, armed robbery, and other violent crimes throughout southeastern Nigeria.
As the suspects await transfer to the NDLEA, police continue to urge residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and cooperate fully with law enforcement in the fight against drug trafficking and related crimes.
The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its dedication to eradicating illicit drugs and ensuring a safer environment for all communities within the state.
