M.I Abaga 

 

M.I Abaga, whose full name is Jude Lemfani Abaga, is one of Nigeria’s most influential rappers, record executives, and music producers. Born on October 4, 1981, in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, M.I Abaga is widely regarded as a pioneer of modern Nigerian hip hop and one of Africa’s greatest lyricists.

 

Raised in Jos, M.I grew up in a creative and supportive household. His mother was a pastor, and his father worked in the civil service. Music was present in his early life, and he developed an interest in poetry and rap as a teenager. Inspired by international hip hop artists such as Jay Z and DMX, he began writing his own lyrics while still in secondary school.

 

M.I later moved to the United States to further his education, studying Business and Economics at Calvin College in Michigan. During his time abroad, he refined his rap skills and performed at local events. His exposure to American hip hop culture helped shape his confidence and technical ability as an artist.

 

After returning to Nigeria in the mid 2000s, M.I entered the music industry with determination. He followed up with his second album MI 2 The Movie in 2010, which further solidified his dominance in the industry. The album was widely praised and included popular tracks that showcased his storytelling ability and lyrical depth. Over the years, M.I released several projects including The Chairman and A Study On Self Worth Yxng Dxnzl. Each project reflected growth and introspection, exploring themes such as self identity, leadership, ambition, and personal struggles.

 

Beyond his music career, M.I Abaga served as the President of Chocolate City Music, one of Nigeria’s leading record labels. Under his leadership, the label nurtured talents such as Ice Prince and Jesse Jagz. His role as an executive further strengthened his influence in shaping Nigeria’s hip hop scene.

 

M.I is often credited with elevating rap music in Nigeria to mainstream acceptance. His technical delivery, wordplay, and intellectual approach to songwriting set new standards for the genre. He has received numerous awards and recognitions across Africa for his contribution to music.
