Wanted Bandit Kingpin Ado Aleru Leads 'Peace Meeting' with Katsina Communities and Nigerian Army Officers

Despite being declared wanted by security forces, notorious bandits leader Ado Aleru resurfaced publicly in Danmusa Local Government Area of Katsina State, where he led a so-called peace meeting attended by Nigerian Army personnel, community leaders, and factions of armed bandit groups.

The meeting aimed to foster peaceful coexistence between Fulani herders and other local communities. Aleru, who remains a fugitive with a ₦5 million bounty on his head, was seen delivering a speech and engaging in discussions—sparking outrage and renewed concerns over state complicity and failed security efforts.

This isn’t the first time Aleru has appeared at peace parleys despite his involvement in heinous attacks. He was previously seen holding dialogues with government representatives and was controversially conferred with a traditional title during Bello Matawalle’s tenure as Zamfara State governor. Matawalle now serves as Minister of State for Defence.

Aleru has been linked to several deadly attacks, including the 2019 massacre in Kadisau, where over 52 people were killed. Although various peace deals have been brokered over the years—including a 2019 agreement and 2020 rewards of brand-new Hilux trucks and cash to “repentant” bandits—violence continues to plague Katsina and Zamfara States.

While officials claim to seek peace, critics argue that negotiating with known killers sends a dangerous message and undermines justice. Many communities remain under siege, with abductions and killings persisting despite repeated talks and incentives.
