Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede was born on September 24, 1966, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. He is originally from Edo State. From a young age, he displayed academic excellence and leadership qualities.
He studied Law at the University of Benin and was called to the Nigerian Bar. Later, he expanded his expertise by earning a Master’s degree in International Banking and Finance from the University of London. He also completed executive education programs at Harvard Business School.
Early Career
Aig-Imoukhuede began his professional career at Guaranty Trust Bank, where he gained experience in corporate banking and financial services. During this period, he formed a professional partnership with Herbert Wigwe, which would later shape the future of Nigerian banking.
Access Bank Transformation
In 2002, Aig-Imoukhuede and Herbert Wigwe acquired Access Bank, which at the time was a relatively small institution. Through strategic reforms, strong corporate governance, and aggressive expansion, they transformed it into a major financial powerhouse.
Under his leadership, Access Bank strengthened its capital base, improved risk management systems, and expanded its customer base across Nigeria. The bank later became one of the most recognized financial brands in Africa.
After stepping down as CEO in 2013, he continued to influence the financial sector through board leadership and advisory roles.
