The Ilorin Shock EPISODE 24
Episode Twenty-Four: No Time to Waste
After Mr Layi left, his voice didn’t.
It stayed with me.
Every morning, even before anyone called my name, my body already knew what to do. I woke up early sometimes before the first shout echoed through the house. Ablution. Prayer. Silence. Focus.
Mr Layi had taught us without lectures. He taught us by example.
We went to school daily, even when the road felt long and the body felt tired. Lateness was no longer something I wanted to be known for. I remembered how one opportunity slipped away because of it and I corrected myself quietly.
When school closed, rest did not begin.
We returned home and went straight into afternoon lessons. Books open. Pens moving. Questions asked and answered. The sun might still be high, but our minds were already working.
After that, we rested briefly just enough to breathe.
Then came night lessons.
Sometimes it was long. Sometimes short. But it was constant. There was no room for laziness. No space for excuses. Every hour mattered.
While others played, we read.
While others slept early, we revised.
While time passed, we learned.
Slowly, I felt something changing inside me.
Discipline stopped feeling like punishment. It became a shield. A structure. A way out.
I realized that knowledge was the one thing no one could beat out of you. No one could take away. And watching Mr Layi earlier had shown me that respect follows preparation.
There truly was no time to waste.
Each day stacked on the other. Each lesson built something stronger than fear confidence.
And for the first time, I wasn’t just surviving Ilorin.
I was growing.
