The Ilorin Shock EPISODE 23

Episode Twenty-Three: The Man Everyone Feared

Life in our new teacher’s house continued, and slowly, faces began to matter.

One of those faces was Mr Layi.

He wasn’t just another senior in the house he was the senior. Everyone knew him. Everyone respected him. And even though he was kind, the fear of him sat heavy in the air.

Mr Layi had a mentor-like presence. He didn’t talk too much. He didn’t joke around carelessly. When he spoke, his words were few but they carried weight.

He was brilliant. Calm. Focused. And he was close to graduating.

Despite his tough presence, he treated me and my friend Olanshile like blood brothers. Not like juniors. Not like kids. Like family.

From that day, things changed for us.

People noticed.

When we walked with Mr Layi, greetings came easily. Doors opened. Voices lowered. Even those who liked to trouble others thought twice before coming close to us.

At night, we slept beside him. That alone felt like protection. His presence filled the room even in silence. When it was time to wake people up for prayers or school, he didn’t move from bed.

He would just shout.

“Wake up!”

And the whole house responded.

No second call.

No excuses.

His voice alone was enough.

Yet, for all the fear, Mr Layi was gentle with us. He corrected us without insult. He listened when we spoke. He shared advice in quiet moments, the kind of advice that stays with you long after the words are gone.

He never bragged about his strength or intelligence. He simply carried himself like someone who knew his worth.

I learned something watching him:

True power doesn’t need noise.

True authority doesn’t beg for attention.

As his graduation drew closer, we felt it the house would not feel the same without him. The protection, the balance, the quiet order he brought would soon leave with him.

And deep inside, I wondered:

What happens to us when the man everyone fears is no longer here?
