Confirmation of the Death of Nigerian Social Media Influencer Dadiyata After Six Years of Disappearance

Abubakar Idris, widely known as Dadiyata, a prominent social media influencer who went missing in 2019, has been confirmed dead following a private investigation.

Dadiyata was abducted at gunpoint from his home in Barnawa, Kaduna State, on August 2, 2019. His disappearance sparked national and international concern, with many suspecting political motives due to his outspoken criticism of top politicians and his affiliation with former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso.

On Wednesday, investigative commentator and social critic Damilola Adekunle announced via Facebook that her investigation had concluded Dadiyata was no longer alive.

“With a heavy heart, I announce that after thorough investigations, I can confirm that Idris Abubakar, known as Dadiyata, is officially dead. #Dadiyata was killed,” she wrote.

Adekunle had earlier launched a ₦10 million investigation fund on May 4, 2025, offering a reward for verifiable information on Dadiyata’s fate.

“I am launching a ₦10 million fund to reward anyone who can provide fact-based details about what happened to Abubakar Idris (aka Dadiyata). If you know anything, dead or alive, please come to my DM,” she posted at the time.

Since his abduction, Dadiyata’s family and supporters have been left in the dark, with calls for justice intensifying over the years. Amnesty International Nigeria has repeatedly criticized the government's lack of progress in the case.

Tragically, Dadiyata’s mother passed away in 2022 without knowing what happened to her son. His disappearance has remained a symbol of suppressed dissent and the dangers faced by outspoken voices in Nigeria’s political landscape.
