Lagos to prosecute 10 suspects for street trading.

Lagos Authorities Arrest 10 for Street Trading and Environmental Violations Along Badagry Expressway

Officials from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) have arrested at least 10 individuals for alleged street trading and breaches of environmental regulations around the Alaba Rago–Ojo axis of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development via a post on his official X.com account on Monday. He reiterated the state government’s firm commitment to enforcing environmental laws.

“Our joint enforcement teams from KAI and LAWMA have begun clearance operations along the Ojo–Alaba Road and Badagry Expressway. Waste evacuation is ongoing, and so far, 10 arrests have been made for various environmental infractions,” Wahab stated.

He warned that the government would take strict action against anyone found dumping waste unlawfully or violating sanitation laws.

“Let it be clear: indiscriminate dumping of waste, environmental defacement, and disregard for our sanitation laws will not be tolerated. Enforcement has begun in earnest and will continue until compliance becomes second nature,” he added.

In a related update, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment, Kunle Adeshina, said the government is intensifying efforts to crack down on street trading across the state.

“LAWMA has stepped up the evacuation of debris and waste left behind by evicted street traders. Trucks are making multiple rounds to ensure the areas are cleared,” Adeshina noted in a separate statement on Monday.

The Lagos State Government had previously imposed a comprehensive ban on street trading, hawking, illegal construction on drainage channels, and the display of goods on walkways. Enacted in 2023, the measure is part of efforts to tackle traffic congestion and curb criminal activities allegedly carried out by individuals posing as traders.

Since the clampdown began, hundreds of offenders have been apprehended. Just last Saturday, 36 traders—34 men and two women—were arrested for displaying goods on road medians along the same Ojo–Alaba stretch.
