Nigerian Senate Advances Bill Imposing Death Penalty for All Kidnapping Offences

The Nigerian Senate has passed a bill for second reading that seeks to classify all kidnapping and hostage-taking offences as acts of terrorism, prescribing the death penalty without the option of a fine or alternative sentences. Presiding over the plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasised the urgency of the legislation and called for its speedy progression through public hearing and final approval. The bill, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, aims to amend the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act.

Following majority support during a voice vote, the bill was referred to the Committees on Judiciary, National Security, Human Rights, and Interior, which are expected to report back within two weeks. This development comes amid rising kidnappings across the country, with recent incidents involving schoolchildren and churchgoers. Currently, Nigeria’s anti-terrorism law prescribes the death penalty only when kidnapping results in death, while other cases attract life imprisonment or lesser penalties.
