EndBadGovernance: Socialist Labour Demands Dismissal of Charges Against Abuja 11 as Trial Stalls

Socialist Labour (SL) has renewed its call for all charges against the 11 protesters arrested during the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance demonstrations in Abuja to be dismissed, describing the trial as unjust and politically motivated. The group said the protesters were targeted for demanding better wages, affordable education, fair palliative distribution, and an end to exploitative policies.

SL criticised the treason charges as outrageous and highlighted that out of 76 nationwide arrests, 32 detainees were minors aged 14 to 17—held for months in violation of the Child Rights Act. The minors’ malnourished appearance in court sparked national outrage, leading President Bola Tinubu to order their release.

Despite this, the case of the remaining “Abuja 11” has faced chronic delays, with adjournments caused by the repeated absence of trial judge Justice Emeka Nwite and the dismissal of the original prosecutor over corruption allegations. SL described the adjournments as a denial of justice and accused the new prosecutor of making politically charged remarks that reveal the state’s attempt to intimidate dissent.

The group demanded an immediate dismissal of all charges, compensation for alleged unlawful detention and torture, and an end to the criminalisation of protest. It also called for mass mobilisation ahead of the next court date on December 10, 2025, insisting that “justice delayed is justice denied.”
