Don’t Scrap Indigeneity Yet, Fagbemi Warns: Nigeria Must First Fix 1914 Amalgamation
Ayokunle Fagbemi, Executive Secretary of the Centre for Peacebuilding, has warned against moves to scrap indigeneity and replace it with residency-based citizenship. In an ARISE News interview, he argued that Nigeria must first address unresolved colonial instruments from the 1914 Amalgamation, which fused diverse kingdoms and ethnic groups without repealing existing treaties. Fagbemi said identity is crucial to national cohesion and that reforms must acknowledge Nigeria’s historical roots. While supporting merit and inclusion over ethnic bias, he cautioned that premature reforms could expose Nigeria to foreign incursions. He added that Nigeria’s complex identities should be viewed as strengths, not erased.
