Pope Francis’s health continues to improve, with notable progress in his voice and mobility, according to the Vatican. The 88-year-old pontiff is recovering from a severe case of pneumonia.

After spending five weeks at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, Pope Francis returned to the Vatican on March 23 to begin a period of at least two months of recovery. Despite doctors advising him to rest, the Pope made a surprise appearance in St. Peter’s Square last Sunday after mass. He was wheeled into the square in a wheelchair with a cannula in his nostrils to assist with breathing. Speaking into a microphone, he wished the crowd a “good Sunday” and even greeted some of them.

The Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis’s condition remains stable, with improvements in his motor skills, breathing, and voice since his last public appearance. While he continues to use high-flow oxygen at night and when necessary during the day, the pontiff is still able to celebrate mass daily and carry out some of his duties. He has also begun holding a few meetings, including one with Secretary of State Pietro Parolin on Monday.

Though he remains in good spirits, the Vatican emphasized that the Pope’s lung infection is still present. A planned meeting with King Charles III, who was scheduled to visit the Pope during a state visit to Italy this week, was postponed due to the pontiff’s health condition.
