The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced on Thursday its decision to conclude operations by 2045, committing to spend more than $200 billion over the next two decades to advance global public health.
This move updates the foundation’s original plan, which stated it would shut down 20 years after co-founder Bill Gates’ death. Instead, the organization is now adopting a fixed timeline to scale up its impact while navigating rapidly changing global conditions.
In a statement, the foundation said the revised strategy is motivated by both “urgency and opportunity”—highlighting how breakthroughs in artificial intelligence present new avenues for improving lives, even as international aid budgets are being reduced.
“The next 20 years are a crucial window to drive progress,” the foundation noted, adding that its accelerated spending aims to address health, poverty, and education challenges more aggressively than ever before.
