  • News Brief: White House Joins TikTok Amid Ongoing Ban Debate

The White House has officially launched a TikTok account, even as President Donald Trump continues to extend deadlines for the Chinese-owned platform to find a U.S. buyer or face a ban.

The account’s first post, a 27-second clip captioned “America, we are BACK! What’s up TikTok?”, gained about 4,500 followers within an hour. In contrast, Trump’s personal TikTok account has over 110 million followers, though he last posted on Election Day, November 5, 2024.

TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, was previously ordered to be sold or banned in the U.S. on national security grounds. A law requiring divestment was set to take effect on January 20, 2025, but Trump paused the ban, later granting a 90-day extension in June that expires in mid-September.

Although Trump had long supported banning the app, he reversed course, claiming TikTok helped secure youth voter support during the 2024 election.

TikTok has nearly two billion global users, while Trump also maintains massive followings on X (108.5M) and Truth Social (10.6M), his personal platform. The official White House accounts on X and Instagram currently have 2.4M and 9.3M followers, respectively.
