• Peter Obi: The Man Who Taxed Poverty in Anambra

    Dear Peter Obi,

Thank you for your thoughts on the Tax Reform Act, which came into force yesterday, which was New Year's Day. However, it seems you have forgotten the following historical facts.

While you were the Governor of Anambra, poverty increased in the state, yet you imposed new and heavy taxes on the people of Anambra.

Please fact-check me: The poverty rate in Anambra was 41.4% in 2003, before you, Obi took office, and rose to 53.7% by 2009, during your governorship, a 29.7% increase.

Yet, despite the rise in poverty under your watch as Governor, on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, you imposed new and heavy taxes on Anambra markets, prompting traders in the state to protest.

    And again, please fact-check me.

When 600 traders from Eke Awka Market protested and filed an appeal against you, you insisted that they must pay your new, heavy taxes.

At that, they led another protest to the Anambra State House of Assembly, barricaded it, and prevented legislative business from proceeding.

And all this was happening while you, Peter, dishonestly hid your own money in tax havens, as shown in the Pandora Papers of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.

Therefore, I find it strange that you, who increased poverty in Anambra and also simultaneously increased taxes, are now accusing the Tinubu administration, which has added $57 billion to our economy, of taxing the poor.

And just so you know, your allegations show that you haven't read the new tax laws, because in those legislations, Nigerians earning less than ₦800,000 will not be taxed.

Meaning that under President Tinubu, those petty traders in Anambra that you taxed to near death would have a tax holiday.

So, please, Peter, reread your post, and direct it at yourself, because it is all about you, the man who taxed poverty in Anambra!

You were taxing poverty as Anambra Governor, but President Tinubu is tackling poverty as Nigeria's President.

  • What Nigerians Can Do To Help President Tinubu Make Nigeria Secure Again

It is not an overstatement to say that President Tinubu was created to lead our nation at a time like this. His declaration of a National Security Emergency and the powerful, actionable steps contained therein show that we finally have a leader with the political will and tactical ability to bell the cat that has proven most stubborn and elusive in the past.

For too long, we have had a numbers challenge—i.e., we did not have enough troops to physically secure a population of 235 million with a landmass of almost 1 million square kilometres.

Today, the President has provided strong leadership to address this lacuna in our national security architecture. And right-thinking Nigerians are grateful for this step to address this hateful scourge.

Already, we have seen results in the recent and decent rescue of students in Kebbi State and worshippers in Kwara State. It is certain that more Tinubu wins will come.

This recruitment into our military and paramilitary forces, along with the recall of 100,000 police officers previously on VIP protection detail, is a welcome development and step in the right direction that all Nigerians should support.

I urge our people to enlist in our Army, Airforce, Navy, Police and paramilitary agencies.

Furthermore, President Bola Tinubu taking the issue of State Police to the National Assembly in his National Emergency on Security is the most radically progressive step a Nigerian leader has done in the War on Terror since 1999. I not only commend the President, but also join in appealing to Parliament to make haste and hearken to, as well as hearten to, the President's call.

If they do this, this tenth National Assembly will be the greatest Legislature in the history of democratic governance in Nigeria.

I call on all Nigerians who want a secure country to contact their Senators and Representatives and ask them to support President Tinubu's initiative. Together, we can help the President fulfil his vision to secure Nigeria.

Once again, we plead with the National Assembly to employ all means, including the Doctrine of Necessity. The nation will be on a sounder footing if our Parliament gives the right hand of fellowship to the President and helps make Nigeria Secure Again!

  • Honestly, and with the fear of God, answer this question:

Why is Peter Obi right for saying that Nnamdi Kanu should never have been arrested and instead that the Federal Government should negotiate with IPOB for peace to reign, but Sheikh Gumi is wrong for saying precisely the same thing about the FG and aggrieved Fulani herders?

Exactly how is Peter Obi different from Sheikh Gumi?

If you cannot respond rationally without insults, then your response itself already answers the question.

  • Akpabio Is The Best Thing To Happen To The National Assembly Since 1999

The Senate, under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, passed the Tax Reform Bill into law. This is the single most important legislation passed by Parliament since Nigeria returned to civil rule in 1999.

By virtue of that legislation, Nigeria's productivity is about to be unleashed, and competition among states has already begun.

Because of that statute, we are already seeing an explosion in revenue generation as Nigeria's tax base expands.

Nigerian workers can now heave a sigh of relief as the tax reforms grant wide-ranging reliefs for Low-Income Earners, who will now pay little to no tax.

This is in addition to the various Regional Development Commission bills passed into law, which have already seen an acceleration of development in Nigeria's geopolitical zones, as the usual state bureaucracies are being bypassed.

Then you come to the landmark Local Government Autonomy Bill, which grants not just autonomy but prosperity to Nigeria's grassroots, from Kaura Namoda to Orile-Aguda.

And then after achieving that, the same Natasha Akpoti that falsely accused me of sexual harassment, is now asserting that this 10th Senate under Senator Akpabio is the worst since 1999!

Then why does she want to return to that very same Senate?

Thankfully, Nigeria's economy has been debased. Our GDP is now at ₦372.8 trillion in 2024, up from the ₦314.02 trillion that President Tinubu met when he took over from General Buhari in 2023.

Would this have been possible without unity of purpose between the National Assembly and the Presidency?

May God bless Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the political leader of the South-South, and may he complete two four-year terms in that office!
