A Lagos court has sentenced Olawale Faleti, a former Director in the Lagos State Ministry of Education, to two years and five months in prison for stealing ₦48.9 million from Access Bank Plc.

The conviction, delivered by Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court, followed multiple counts of theft brought by the EFCC. The theft occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, exploiting a system glitch in a bank-issued credit card, and contravened Section 287(1)(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Justice Oshodi stressed that public confidence in financial institutions must be protected and that severe consequences follow attempts to defraud banks.

  • New Year’s Day Fire Razes Ikotun Electronics Market in Lagos, Destroys Shops, Washing Machines, TVs and Generators Amid Rising Fire Incidents

A fire outbreak on New Year’s Day gutted four electronics shops in Ikotun, Lagos State, destroying valuable goods including washing machines, television sets and power generators. The affected shops are located in a building beside the GUO Transport Company in the Ikotun area of the state.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the fire broke out early in the day, prompting residents and neighbours to intervene in an attempt to prevent it from spreading to other parts of the building. A nearby resident said community members poured large quantities of water on the fire before the Lagos State Fire Service arrived at the scene.

The timely intervention of firefighters was credited with stopping the blaze from consuming the entire building and nearby properties. Although the exact cause of the fire could not be confirmed, it was suspected to have been triggered by a faulty electrical circuit.

No casualties were recorded, and the area was later cordoned off for safety. The incident adds to a growing list of recent fire outbreaks in Lagos State, including a similar blaze at the Army Arena Market in Oshodi within the past eight days, where several shops and goods were also destroyed before firefighters brought the situation under control.

  • Policeman, five others dead as trucks collide on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

At least six people, including a police officer, lost their lives in a multiple-truck collision on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday night.

According to reports, the crash involved several articulated vehicles, including a fuel tanker, a container-laden truck, and another truck transporting cartons of biscuits. One victim was reportedly burnt beyond recognition, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed eight casualties and released footage showing the wreckage and bodies at the scene. The accident caused severe gridlock, leaving motorists stranded as rescue and recovery operations continued late into the night.

Eyewitnesses said one of the trucks veered off the road and rammed into the bridge barricade, causing its head to detach and plunge into the river. Some occupants were still missing as of press time. A towing vehicle sent to clear the wreckage was also struck during the rescue effort.

Lagos Commissioner of Police, Olorundare Jimoh, who confirmed the incident, said preliminary findings point to brake failure as the likely cause. “We lost a police inspector in the crash, and those responsible will be prosecuted,” he stated, adding that three injured victims had been taken to the hospital.

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials joined other emergency responders to manage the situation. The gridlock extended to both lanes of the expressway, forcing impatient drivers to drive against traffic.

Commercial drivers reportedly hiked transport fares between Berger and Oshodi from ₦1,000 to as high as ₦2,500. The Kara Bridge tragedy occurred less than 24 hours after another truck acc+dent on the Otedola Bridge, intensifying concerns over recurring road mishaps on the busy highway.

  • Nigerian Senate passes bill imposing life imprisonment for child defilement no option if fine.

In a landmark move to curb rising cases of sexual violence, lawmakers push for harsher penalties — as a Lagos court simultaneously hands life sentence to a man for raping a 7-year-old girl.

    Senate President
The Nigerian Senate is currently trending after passing a tougher bill prescribing life imprisonment for anyone convicted of defiling a minor, with no option of fine, in a bid to combat the alarming rise in child sexual abuse across the country.

The new amendment, which replaces the existing provisions of the Criminal Code Act and the Penal Code, was strongly championed by Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), who insisted that offenders deserve nothing less than life imprisonment — and even hinted that capital punishment would have been more fitting.

Initially, the bill proposed a 20-year jail term for paedophiles. However, Senator Aliero called for a stiffer sentence, arguing that lenient laws have failed to deter offenders.

Under the new proposal Defilement of a minor now carries life imprisonment — without an option of fine. Rape now carries a minimum of 10 years to life imprisonment. The law updates the Criminal Code Act (Section 218), which previously prescribed 13 years to life imprisonment, and Section 221, which allowed 2 years for unlawful carnal knowledge of minors. The Penal Code (Section 283), applicable in Northern Nigeria, which carried 14 years to life imprisonment or fine, will also be updated.

In Sharia-compliant states, penalties remain even more severe — extending to death or life imprisonment, depending on interpretation and local enforcement.

Coincidentally, on the same day as the Senate’s deliberation, a Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) Court in Oshodi, Lagos, sentenced a 25-year-old graphic designer to life imprisonment for raping a 7-year-old girl in 2020.

According to court records, the convict — a neighbour of the victim’s family in a “face-me-I-face-you” compound — repeatedly assaulted the minor when her parents were away, forcing himself on her in the kitchen and bathroom.
The judgement has been widely commended, though some Nigerians believe that life imprisonment is still not harsh enough, with growing calls for chemical castration or death penalty for child rapists.
Others are also urging lawmakers to criminalise false rape accusations, warning that misuse of the law could undermine justice for real victims.

This moves by the Nigerian Senate marks one of the strongest legislative actions yet in the fight against sexual violence and child exploitation.
If fully enacted and enforced, it could reshape how rape and child defilement cases are prosecuted nationwide — potentially closing loopholes that have long allowed offenders to escape justice.

  • Alleged $4.5bn fraud: Emefiele’s phone forensic test stalled as EFCC, defence clash.

The forensic examination of a mobile phone central to the $4.5 billion alleged fraud trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has stalled following a sharp disagreement between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the defence team over how to carry out the court-ordered test.

At the resumed hearing before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Special Offences Court on Tuesday, both parties traded accusations over who was responsible for the failure of the forensic process, which had been scheduled for September 24 and 25, 2025.

Emefiele, alongside his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, is facing a 19-count charge of alleged fraud, corruption, and abuse of office.

The EFCC had tendered an iPhone 12 containing WhatsApp messages as part of its evidence against the former apex bank chief.

The court had earlier ordered that the device, marked as “iPhone 2”, be subjected to a scientific forensic analysis by experts representing both sides to determine the authenticity of the WhatsApp conversations in dispute.

However, Emefiele’s lawyer, Olalekan Ojo, SAN, told the court that the exercise could not proceed because the EFCC repeatedly obstructed efforts to access the device.

According to him, despite the presence of representatives from the prosecution, the defence, and the court’s Registrar, the commission refused to produce the phone for examination.

Ojo said: “The first obstacle was that the EFCC insisted the device could not be fully exposed to the team. Then, on the second day, even when the Registrar clarified that your lordship’s order covered both the phone and its WhatsApp contents, the EFCC representatives refused to produce it when the Apple expert demanded it. We were told a categorical ‘No.’”
