Sokoto Boat Accident: 26 People Rescued So Far — Lawmaker
The member representing Goronyo-Gada Federal Constituency, Bashir Gorau, says 26 persons have been rescued following Sunday’s boat accident in Sokoto, where about 50 passengers were onboard.
Speaking on Tuesday, Gorau explained that 25 men and one woman were among those rescued. He noted that the Sokoto Rima River Basin Development Authority has agreed to temporarily halt water release from the Goronyo Dam to aid ongoing rescue efforts.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had earlier reported fears that about 40 passengers were dead, but Gorau stressed that the actual number of missing persons remains unclear.
He described the incident as a “persistent tragedy” caused largely by poor adherence to safety measures in local water transport.
