The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has requested the Federal High Court in Lagos to dismiss a motion by Godwin Emefiele, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), aimed at halting the forfeiture of properties and funds linked to him. On August 25, 2024, the court granted the EFCC temporary custody of $2.045 million, seven premium properties, and shares connected to Emefiele.

During the recent court session, Emefiele's lawyer, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), appealed to Justice Deinde Dipeolu to stay further proceedings until an appeal filed by Emefiele is resolved. Ojo argued that proceeding without waiting for the Court of Appeal would result in "judicial rascality."

However, EFCC’s counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), opposed the application, stating that no formal appeal had been filed by Emefiele. He emphasized that the defendant merely submitted documents to the Appeal Court registry without following due legal procedures, including obtaining the court's permission.

Justice Dipeolu adjourned the case until October 11, 2024, when he will rule on the application.
