Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, has warned that the external revenue service announced by U.S. President Donald Trump could further complicate the global tax system. Oyedele, who has been leading Nigeria's tax reform efforts, made the comments following Trump's inauguration speech, in which the president outlined plans to impose tariffs and taxes on foreign countries to boost U.S. revenue.

Oyedele noted that this move could disrupt international trade and exacerbate challenges in the global tax landscape. He emphasized that Nigeria's ongoing tax reforms, including recent proposals by President Bola Tinubu, could help the country navigate these changes and leverage potential opportunities.

The Nigerian Governor’s Forum recently endorsed tax reform bills, including a revised VAT sharing formula that aims for more equitable resource distribution across states. Oyedele has expressed support for this approach.
