Lagos Assembly Tightens Security

Lagos Assembly Tightens Security Amid Speaker Impeachment Controversy

The Lagos State House of Assembly has implemented stricter security measures, requiring officials to present valid identity cards to access the complex. This move follows the recent impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, which has sparked ongoing controversies.

During a visit to the Assembly complex on Monday, our correspondent observed calm as plenary resumed. A notice signed by Omotayo Adekemi, on behalf of the Acting Clerk of the House, Taiwo Ottun, directed all staff and legislative aides to present valid identity cards for entry. Ottun emphasized that access would be denied without proper identification.

The Lagos State Police Command has assured the public of maintaining order, regardless of developments within the Assembly.

This directive comes two days after Obasa publicly insisted he remained Speaker until due process was followed. Obasa was impeached on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation. He was replaced by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda.

Monday’s plenary marks the third session presided over by Meranda since Obasa’s impeachment, with the former Speaker absent from the last two sittings.
