Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started after someone answered a phone call near the tanker, causing highly flammable vapors to ignite. The flames quickly spread to the tanker and part of the filling station.

Prompt action from firefighters and local residents helped contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading further. Authorities confirmed no fatalities, but the extent of property damage remains under assessment.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire and to implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Earlier in January, another tanker accident in Niger State claimed 86 lives, and in Delta State, five people were killed when a petrol tanker lost control and ignited.

In October 2024, a fuel tanker explosion in Jigawa State tragically claimed over 170 lives, with many others injured.
