Jannik Sinner remains determined to improve and grow stronger as he heads into his Australian Open semi-final clash against American Ben Shelton. The world number one has been on an impressive 19-match win streak at hardcourt Grand Slams, following his title victory in Melbourne in 2024 and his triumph at the US Open.

Sinner, who is aiming for a successful Grand Slam title defense after winning his first major title in Melbourne last year, is not taking anything for granted. "Every match starts with 0-0, and I just try to do my best," said Sinner. “We never take things for granted. We are here trying to understand every situation, trying to get better and stronger. We’ll see how it goes.”

The Italian, at 23, has already matched fellow Italian great Nicola Pietrangeli by reaching five Grand Slam singles semi-finals, bringing valuable experience to the big stage. Meanwhile, Shelton, ranked 21st, will be making just his second Grand Slam semi-final appearance after a notable run at the 2023 US Open, where he was defeated by eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Shelton said, acknowledging Sinner’s defending champion status. “It’s a great opportunity to improve my game and see where I’m at.”

Sinner’s dominant performance in the quarter-finals, where he defeated Alex de Minaur with ease, showcased the level of tennis he has maintained over the past year. With the win, he extended his hardcourt Grand Slam win streak to 19 matches.

Shelton, ranked 14th, is climbing up the rankings and could move to number five if he captures his first Grand Slam title. The winner of the Sinner-Shelton semi-final will face either Novak Djokovic or second seed Alexander Zverev in the final, with both playing their semi-final on Friday.

Djokovic, eyeing a record 25th Grand Slam title, overcame physical pain and Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling quarter-final. Despite concerns about his fitness, the 37-year-old remains determined. “If I manage to be physically good enough, I think mentally and emotionally I’m as motivated as I can be,” he said.

Zverev, looking for his first Grand Slam, is also in great form. “I’m going to prepare myself for a tough battle,” said the German, reflecting on his journey to the semi-finals and the challenge ahead.

The Australian Open semi-finals on Friday promise to deliver thrilling matchups as Sinner, Shelton, Djokovic, and Zverev all battle for a place in Sunday’s final.
