The Maldives has begun enforcing a “generational smoking ban,” prohibiting anyone born on or after January 1, 2007 from buying or using tobacco. The nationwide policy, effective November 1, aims to create a tobacco-free generation. The ban covers all tobacco products, applies to tourists as well, and requires retailers to verify age. The country also already bans vaping products for all ages. Violations carry fines, including up to 50,000 rufiyaa for selling to underage persons. Similar proposals exist in the UK, while New Zealand has already repealed its own generational ban.
