Twenty-seven people have died in a boat mishap on Kainji Lake, Niger State.

The wooden boat, carrying about 138 passengers, capsized on Tuesday along the Shagunu–Dunga axis in Borgu LGA. The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) said rescue efforts saved 46 men, 58 women, and several children with the aid of life jackets.

So far, 27 bodies have been recovered, while rescue operations continue. NIWA officials, supported by security agencies, community leaders, and the Nigerian Shipowners Forum, removed the sunken boat and pledged stronger safety measures.

The incident adds to Nigeria’s rising cases of boat accidents, including recent tragedies in Sokoto, Jigawa, and Niger states.
