Shop Owner Alleges Obstruction to Access CCTV by Landlord After Jewelry Worth Millions Stolen in Break-in
A Nigerian jeweler has cried out after claiming he was blocked from accessing CCTV footage crucial to investigating a burglary in his store by his landlord.
“Following the break in and theft incident that happened in my shop on Tuesday, the mall workers were apprehended by police and they came to the mall yesterday (Friday) to survey the area and look at the CCTV. Because of time they were not able to finish looking at the CCTV footage,” he explained, adding that jewelry worth millions of naira was carted away.
He said police initially granted him permission to get a personal copy of the footage. “I expressly asked that I’d like to have a copy of the CCTV footage for myself and the police agreed.”
But according to him, things quickly took a different turn. “I went down to the mall today, told the staff and he began copying the files into my hard disk. Half way through he stepped outside.
Another staff (a lady) came in and shut the whole process down. When I asked why, she said she received order and wouldn’t tell me who from. She finally mentioned that the landlord asked her not to let me take copies.”
The jeweler alleged that his hard disk was seized and his phone destroyed in the scuffle. “They sized my hard disk. Broke my phone. When I called the same police guy, he changed and said I could not take a long CCTV footage.”
He added that his own CCTV decoder had been carried away during investigations, leaving him solely dependent on the mall’s cameras. “Mind you, the CCTV decoder in my shop was carried along and I depend wholly on the mall’s CCTV,” he said.
The incident has stirred concerns about transparency in handling evidence tied to crimes involving losses worth millions.
