UPDATED: NRC MD Takes Responsibility For Abuja-Kaduna Train Derailment
The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Kayode Opeifa, has taken full responsibility for Tuesday’s Abuja-Kaduna train derailment.
Opeifa, speaking on Channels Television, said four passengers sustained serious injuries while others were treated and discharged. He assured Nigerians that investigations by the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) would be thorough and not compromised.
“There was no fatality, which is a near miss. But I take full responsibility as MD. Incidents like this should not happen, and we will ensure they don’t recur,” he said.
The NRC has suspended train operations on the route pending safety audits. Opeifa added that reconstruction work would begin once NSIB declares the site open, with a projected timeline of 30 days.
The derailment, which occurred shortly after the train departed Abuja around 11 am, caused panic among the 618 passengers on board. Military and air force personnel quickly secured the scene.
Ticket refunds have been initiated, while investigations continue into the cause of the incident.
